Throughout the entire value chain, from cultivating this species in Africa to delivering our dietary supplement in Europe, sustainability is deeply embedded in DMB’s core. Our unwavering dedication to sustainability drives every decision we make. We prioritize eco-friendly practices, ensuring that our operations have a positive impact on the environment. At each step, we remain steadfast in our commitment to a sustainable future.
Sustainability
New crops are established in degraded areas using the agroforestry model, which promotes greater ecosystem biodiversity and enriches depleted soils through the combined cultivation of Synsepalum dulcificum with other tropical species and nitrogen-fixing plants.
Biodiversity
Circular
We invest in research and development to valorize by-products of DMB® production, such as its seeds.
To achieve zero production waste, these by-products are currently used for biogas generation in the production plant.
We provide direct support to smallholder farmers, offering training in Good Agricultural Practices (GAP), organic cultivation, and access to this novel high-value crop. We negotiate a fair price in advance and commit to purchasing their entire harvest.
Ethical
Renewable
Solar energy is used for the main needs of the factory, and biogas is generated from the by-products. Water is sourced from tanks that store rainwater, which is abundant during certain times of the year but scarce during the rest of the year.
Production process
Harvesting
The berries are hand-picked one by one early in the morning when it is cooler. Expert harvesters select the highest quality fruits at their optimal level of ripeness, separating the suitable ones from those that are damaged or in poor condition.
Processing
The selected fruits are transported to the factory and processed on the same day. In the production line, the berries go through three steps: cleaning, washing, and rinsing. During this process, no chemicals are applied, only natural antimicrobial products.
Juicing
The pulp obtained from pressing is extracted, discarding the seeds in the process. The resulting juice, which contains the miraculin from the pulp and the antioxidants from the edible skins, is immediately frozen. It undergoes no irradiation or thermal treatment processes.
Freeze-drying
The pulp goes through freeze-drying, a vacuum freeze-drying technology that preserves the taste-modifying property and high antioxidant capacity of the fresh fruit completely intact.
Packaging
The freeze-dried product is sieved to obtain a delicate and hygroscopic powder. It is packaged in high-protection containers against moisture and oxygen. These active packaging ensures the stability and quality of the product for several years at room temperature. DMB® is stored in Madrid, Spain.
Quality and Traceability
DMB® is manufactured in compliance with the quality and food safety specifications established by the EFSA for this novel food, and it complies with European Directive 2002/46/EC for dietary supplements.
Complete traceability is guaranteed throughout the value chain. Each batch of DMB® in our warehouses has its complete history, traceable to specific farmers, and several analyses are conducted throughout the supply chain to ensure maximum quality.
Certifications
DMB® holds several international certifications, including:
DMB® is authorized for sale as a dietary supplement in the EU under the denomination of “dried fruits of Synsepalum dulcificum.”
The processing of the fruits is carried out under IFS and BRC certifications for quality and food safety.
The freeze-drying process takes place in an ISO 9001 certified clean room, adhering to Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs).
The company is certified as a B Corp, accrediting its commitment to social and environmental protection.
